George Blomme and Doug McClure - both Midwest transplants to New York - met each other in 1966 at a party hosted by a mutual friend. George was charmed by the follow-up holiday card that Doug sent to his apartment. They have been together ever since. In 1982, they made each other "family" in the only way recognized by law at the time - adoption.
George had a long career as a transportation planner. Doug worked in finance. They are now both retired and live in Midtown Manhattan, close to the art, theater and easy transportation that they love.
In 2015, with the Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage, George and Doug decide that it is time to get married. Ironically, the decision they made years ago - for Doug to adopt George - may prevent them from getting married despite 49 years of shared life.
